Meta tags are snippets of informational code located between your <HEAD> </HEAD> tags. These tags are separate from and are not included in the HTML document you have created.
To give you a background, Meta tags were developed in the mid 90s to help address the rapid growth of web pages. However, in the late 90s, many webmasters saw its potential and have begun using it extensively it to unjustly benefit their sites. Due to this abuse, the major search engines have decided to discontinue the use of meta tags as the main criteria when listing sites.
In this article, I will be discussing the four types of Meta Content and these are:
Meta Content Language
The natural language of the document is indicated in the Meta Content Language tag. It is also known as the Meta Name Language. This tag is used by robots to categorize the language of the page.
We recommend that you only use this tag if your website is written in non-US English. While we have not yet personally tested this, our members have reported that using this tag have helped their non-US English sites to be categorized properly by the search engines.
Below is an example of a Meta Content Language tag:
Meta Content Script Type
The Meta Content Script Type Tag is used to specify the default scripting language of the document.
We have not found any advantages to using this tag as the search engines can actually detect scripts on their own. Likewise, browsers also have their own methods in detecting scripts. Since both the search engines and browsers do not have any need nor use for this tag, we do not recommend that you bother using this.
But just for your reference, below is an example of a Meta Content Script Type:
Meta Content Style Type
The Meta Content Style Type is used to specify the default Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) language for the documents.
We do not advise using the Meta Content Style Type tag as it does not have any effect as to how the search engines look at your site. The search engines do not need to know the sheet style of a document and the web browsers also do not look at the meta tags to determine style sheet information.
Below is an example of a Meta Content Style Type tag:
Meta Content Type
The Meta Content Type is used to identify the character set of a website. In addition to using a DTD declaration above the Header, it is recommended that you also use the Meta Content Type tag to avoid encountering issues as to how your page is displayed. If you do not use this tag and your document uses UTF-8 punctuation characters, your document could end up being displayed in ISO or ASCII character sets as a consequence of not using the Meta Content Type tag.

Mike Grehan once said that “Asking a site for a link is like asking someone to do business with you.” And I agree with him. This task is very important as it is one of the means by which we can consistently increase our rankings, traffic and sales. Further, linking allows you to build a foundation for your business.
